Senior Driver License Renewal in California: New 2025 Rules

California has implemented significant changes to senior driver license renewal requirements for 2025, streamlining the process while maintaining safety standards. The most notable change is the elimination of mandatory written tests for drivers over 70, focusing instead on vision screening and driving record evaluation.

Senior drivers (70 and older) must now renew their licenses in person every five years, but the new rules eliminate the automatic written test requirement that previously applied. Instead, the DMV will conduct a mandatory vision test and review your driving record to identify any safety concerns. This change recognizes that many senior drivers maintain excellent driving skills and knowledge.

The vision test remains a critical component of senior license renewal. You must demonstrate visual acuity of at least 20/40 in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them to your appointment. Drivers who don't meet the standard may receive a restricted license or be required to undergo additional medical evaluation.
